Earlier this year I had the privilege of working with Angela Shay, a wonderful photographer who also happens to be one of my best friends. We did several weddings together this year (more on those later) the first being Chris and Tara’s wedding in Louisville and Southern Indiana. Here are a few of my favorite shots of the day.

The Adventure Dates of Liz and Lyle at Shaker Village. ; linkx=http://www.laurieappleby.com/2011/10/18/engaged-the-adventure-dates-of-liz-and-lyle-at-shaker-village/" allowscriptaccess="always" /]
I met Liz when we took a costume construction class at UK (she can sew circles around me!) and we’ve remained friends on Facebook. Every month her and her fiance Lyle take turns planning what they call “Adventure Dates.” They’ve gone to the gun range, the Creation Museum, and the orchard-among many others. I was exited when Liz and Lyle asked me to be their wedding photographer (thanks guys!) and I knew I wanted to incorporate their fun dates into the engagement session. So for September’s Adventure Date I got to tag along and take their engagement photos out at Shaker Village. It was my first time out there and with the exception of the super windy roads getting there I really loved it. It was an amazing place to shoot but Liz and Lyle made it even more awesome by being so cute and romantic with each other!
At one point I was on the opposite side of the fence taking some shots and all of the sudden I hear Liz yell. I look and these goats are charging me from across the pasture. I have never climbed over a fence so fast! Thanks for the warning Liz!

I recently participated in an Artist Trading card event which was sponsored by the Lexington Art League and citzensCREATE! an organization here in town. They were looking for 50 people to make 10 trading card-sized works of art to trade with other artists as a way of promoting visual art in Lexington and to help artists network. The swap took place at the September Gallery Hop at the mayor’s office in downtown.
Here are the cards I made (click on the photo to see a bigger version):
I arrived at the swap late but there were more than enough artists to trade with. It was nice to meet new people and see work from more talented people here in Lexington. I am looking forward to participating in the next swap!

I’ve been meaning to take Ruby’s 6 month portraits for a few weeks  now but weather, work, and sleepy baby kept getting in the way. I finally got to take Ruby out yesterday to the Arboretum to take the pics. I had grand plans for the shoot including an adorable little apple and hair flower. Unfortunately thing went south almost instantly, she probably didn’t like the grass. I was able to get just a couple of shots off before things went from cranky to meltdown. I quickly packed her up and took her home.
So this past weekend I enlisted Heath’s help and we went back to the Arboretum. I had brought this *adorable* white dress I got on clearance ($5!) after Easter and a back-up dress, just in case. Oh, and a little hand-made blanket that I rescued from Goodwill for her to lay on so as to avoid the whole grass issue.
After fighting tooth and nail to get the dress (why do they make it so difficult? ‘They” being the manufacturers) onto Ruby we set her on the blanket. I thought she might tripod and I could get a picture of her sitting up with the dress poofing out around her…..
But that didn’t work…..
Flipping her onto her stomach didn’t help…..
I thought all was lost and I would have to hope that the third time really is the charm……
But then I changed her into the back up dress and bounced her around for a while while Heath took the camera from me. At first she was still kind of angry…..
(Talk to the hand!)
a little hungry…..
Then she thought about it a little bit….
and finally she decided to come around!
Things were going good for about 5 minutes…..
then she gave us this look….
and did this…..
and I knew our time was up. Not quite the photo shoot I envisioned in my head but that’s okay, she’s adorable nonetheless

Ruby had her 6 month check-up this past Friday. Guess how a certain someone deals with the stress of three needles getting plunged into her little girl’s sweet chubby thigh? Sure, it might be a little strange to some people to take pictures at your kids doctors appointment (and I did get some strange looks at first) but hey, to each his own!

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of taking pictures of my girl. In less than 2 weeks she is going to be six months old! This weekend she started noticing that there are thing UP and spent a good amount of time looking up at things high on the wall or on the ceiling. She also figured out that she can turn around in her Exersaucer and how to make a couple of the toys make noise. It’s awesome watching her connect the dots and figure things out.

On my most recent trip to Minnesota to see my family my mom had me go through some of the clothes I used to wear as a kid. All of them were stored in a Lane cedar chest, something I always loved to explore as a kid-all the special things were stored in there.
It was fun looking through the clothes. The styles were obviously very different than they are now but the sizing it so different too. I pulled out an 18 month baptismal outfit that my dad wore and it was so teeny! I think it probably would have fit Ruby when she was born but definitely not as 18 months! I pulled out several tops and dresses that I’ve seen over and over on myself in pictures. I took a few sweaters, a couple dresses and a cheese-tastic unicorn t-shirt but more than any of them I was so exited about this little kimono:

I remember bringing this kimono to show-and-tell in kindergarden. It was a gift from a friend of my parents who lived in Japan. Thankfully, it is still in really good shape. I think I’m about 2 in this picture? Maybe 1 1/2? I guess I actually did have curly hair at some point it my life! And even though everyone says that Ruby looks like Heath I can totally see her in this picture:
In a few years when Ruby is old enough I can’t wait to take pictures of her in it too. Not that I’m ready for to be that size yet. I’m fine with her staying small for a little bit whole lot longer!
