On Saturday we took Ruby to get her first haircut. Nothing major, just enough to even things out a bit and make her look a bit less shaggadelic. I got off one blurry shot before she decided that she wouldn't do this thing without sitting with me.
This past Friday was Gallery Hop and the opening reception of For the Delight of the Children at Christ Church Cathedral, a group show that I participated in. We brought Ruby with: I guess the rookie mom in me is still naive enough to think that Ruby would behave at an event like this. Yeah, right. I could have gotten a babysitter or put her in daycare for the evening but I want her to see these kinds of things-plus she needs to be out in public in order to learn how to behave in public. Still, I ended up being very frustrated that night. It was a bad combo of she can never sit still for more than 5 seconds and she's been very, very clingy lately, but only to me. She wants very little to do with Heath right now. So if I wasn't holding her she was running around like a nut up and down the halls, up and down the aisles in the sanctuary, and repeat. Heath tried to wrangle her but...yeah... Eventually Heath took her into the closet that was right next to wear my work was displayed. They were in there for a few minutes and a friend and I made jokes about the noises she was making, saying we could tell people that's where they kept the Holy Ghost during events. We were able to keep her kind of, sort of occupied for just over an hour and then you could just tell that a meltdown of epic proportions was brewing. We left and I was disappointed because I had wanted to see some more of my friends. Very selfish, I know. It's times like this that I question my parenting skills. I know I shouldn't expect too much of her but at the same time I don't want to coddle her. Lesson learned: Either get child care or drive separately so Heath can take her home when the time comes. On Saturday we took Ruby to get her first haircut. Nothing major, just enough to even things out a bit and make her look a bit less shaggadelic. I got off one blurry shot before she decided that she wouldn't do this thing without sitting with me. She did very well, I think. She didn't scream or cry during the cut she just wouldn't sit still! Linsey was able to get the last little bit cut when Ruby became occupied with stuffing Mum Mums in my mouth. If you're thinking "what the hell is a Mum Mum", a Mum Mum is sort of like a rice cake for babies. As you can tell from my expression they aren't particularly good. Blech. On Sunday we spent a lot of time working on organizing the blue room (our office). At one point Ruby was very quiet and when I found her I discovered that she had opened the pantry, knocked down the peanut butter jar, somehow got it open, and helped herself: Towards the end of the day Ruby decided to be naked and started playing in front of a big mirror. The really funny pictures are those of her fully naked dancing with herself in the mirror but I'll save the fully nekkid pictures for her Shutterfly book. I'm pretty sure that this little gal is ready to potty train. She climbed up on her changing table and said, "diaper pease!" Just another interesting adventure!

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. Last year I didn't get into it (for reasons I can't remember) so this year I had to make up for my lameness. Early on I decided to go as a Zombie Waitress which turned into Zombie Housewife just by virtue of how everything looked when it all came together. Behold. Laurie as Zombie! Scary, right? The whole look was about $25: Dress: Salvation Army, $1.50 Apron: Peddler's Mall, $5 Cami: Walmart, $5 Shoes: Goodwill, $3 Creme makeup: Halloween Express, $6 KoolAid packet (for bloody mouth, totally disgusting, btw): $0.30 Black blood: Target, $5.50 Necklace: One I already owned that just happened to break the day before. How convenient! I LOVE the way it turned out and I got a lot of positive reactions from people. My friend Angie made the best comment saying that she would "totally shoot me in the head" because I looked so scary. It was fun freaking people out. Ruby's also been a busy little Halloween-er (haha). Saturday we took the kids to a Little Goblins Halloween thingy put together by the city. It was pretty cold and really blah but it didn't seem to keep the people away. This was the only decent shot I got of Ruby in her costume. After we went outside it was coats on. Today Ruby gets to don her costume again to go Trick or Treating at her dad's work. After that I am not sure if we will go out with her again or if we'll stay home and pass out candy. Whatever your plans are today stay safe and have fun!
Yesterday I turned 35. That's totally insane to me. I most definitely do not feel like I am 35 years old. I still feel like I am in my mid-to-late 20's. The day was like pretty much any other day, with lots of extra love from those around me. I worked, picked Ruby up from daycare (and got her to say "happy birthday" which was totally awesome), and then we all went out for Thai food (yum) and a sub-par pumpkin shake for dessert (I'm talking to you, Culver's). Shake aside, it was a great day. Tonight we finally got around to carving the pumpkins that have been sitting on our step for the past week. Ruby was mildly interested in what we were doing at first and then pumpkin guts, planes, and acorns became far more interesting. By the time we were done she had given the stairs a nice, slimy coat of seeds and pulp. Technically, these are Ruby's first pumpkins. Last year, at 10 months old, she fell asleep pretty much immediately after daycare. I didn't even get the chance to dress her in her costume-she was going to be Sue Sylvester, I had a track suit, whistle, and mega phone-super funny. Anyway, since these are her first pumpkins I tried to get a good picture of her with them but I think she was just done by that point. Heath claims that he has never carved a pumpkin before but I think he's just forgotten, right? I think that they turned out great! This morning as we left for daycare Ruby said, "Bye bye punkin!"
Happy Halloween! Yesterday we went to Frankfort, KY to attend the Fall Festival at Josephine Sculpture Park. Even though the park has been open since about 2009 I have never been out there. (I am constantly coming across new artsy places around Lexington, it's great!) I learned that Jospehine was founded by artists who had been part of the residency program at Franconia Sculpture Park, an amazing park just a few miles from my parent's house in Minnesota.
I think Ruby enjoyed herself (It may have been too close to nap time) she liked to feel the sculptures and said, "hot", a lot. She also got to see her first butterflies and hugely fat bumblebees. My water broke at 3:30 in the morning on December 17, 2010. AHHHH!!!
I got up to go to the bathroom and I felt a gush of warmth. I paused to make sure I really felt something and then another came. And another! I woke up H and we went to the bathroom. I was shaking like crazy, probably a combo of cold and “holy shit this is actually happening.” I hadn’t had any contractions but we called my midwife who said to go back to sleep and call her when contractions were 5-1-1. H got me some dry undies and I put on the embarrassingly large overnight pad and went back to bed. Ha! Like H or I could go back to sleep! Right. Plus I was pretty sure I was having contractions but they just felt like really, really strong menstrual cramps. We both got out of bed and as soon as I stood up it was like the flood gates had opened. My ginormous pad didn’t help one bit! H had to get 2 towels, one for me to wipe off my legs and use to get to the bathroom and one to wipe up the floor! In case you’re wondering: The fluid has no odor but is yellow and kind of thick-ish. And now I know where all my mucus was. But I never saw the plug. We set up camp in the living room. I ate something and started to take my antibiotics (I had tested positive for strep B). We started timing contractions and there were 3 minutes apart and lasting for about 45 seconds (which by the way, it didn’t feel nearly that long, I thought it had been more like 10 seconds). So were were like, “ummmm…..already?” I called my doula and she said that sometimes in early labor the timing of contractions can mimic later stages of labor but since I was talking to her with little trouble it was unlikely that I would be having a baby anytime soon. Damn! Fast labor would be *awesome*! She told us to stop timing them and to get some rest. After that H is snoozed away on the couch. I attempted to rest but couldn't Baby just started moving around again (after much thrashing earlier this evening. Oh, and I didn’t go to bed until 2am. Oops!) I wasn't sure how often the contractions were coming but they weren't really increasing in intensity yet and I’d been able to breathe through them fairly well. I noticed that if I grabbed something and held onto it it increased the tension in my body and I was not able to let go of the pain as easy. I am concentrated on relaxing my entire body when another contraction came. Oh, and when they ended it is a HUGE relief and I went back to feeling completely normal, like nothing was going on. Around 6am I woke H up because the contractions felt like they were getting closer together and they were definitely more intense. We started timing again and they were about 2 minutes apart, lasting for about 45 seconds. H called our midwife, Sara, and she said that she would call back in an hour. In an hour they were two minutes apart and lasted for about 60 seconds so she said she was going to make her way over to the house. We also called our doula and she said she’d be there as soon as she found someone to take her kids (they happened to cancel school that day). |
